Each chair is constructed in solid and figured mahogany, with a tall rectangular upholstered back enclosed within a broad architectural frame, above a bowed seat and long moulded arms terminating in tightly scrolled volutes. The arm supports are carved with restrained foliate detail, while the frames are raised on gently curved front legs and sabre rear legs. The treatment of the backs is particularly distinctive.
The form closely relates to a Rhenish upholstered armchair of circa 1820–25 illustrated as plate 196 in Rudolf Pressler and Robin Straub’s Biedermeier Furniture. The authors identify that model as characteristic of the late Empire style as it continued into the Biedermeier period, itself derived from French Restoration furniture under Louis XVIII. The present pair shares an identical silhouette, although here the decorative effect is achieved through figured mahogany rather than ornamental inlay
Upholstered in Schumacher’s Tutsi velvet, designed in collaboration with David Kaihoi, with a red ground and irregular black geometric pile. The mahogany frames retain an established surface and patina consistent with age.
