A French provincial Louis XV buffet constructed in solid walnut, the broad moulded top above a pair of panelled cupboard doors centred by a stop-fluted upright. Each door is worked with shaped and moulded panels terminating in opposing scrolls and retains decorative iron escutcheons, one fitted with a working key.
The cabinet opens to reveal a shelved interior with a fitted upper drawer, retaining later floral textile lining to the shelves and green felt to the drawer. The façade is raised above a finely shaped and moulded apron terminating in short cabriole legs with carved scroll feet.
Dating from the Louis XV period, the buffet demonstrates the restrained interpretation of Rococo forms characteristic of French provincial cabinetmaking. The walnut has developed a rich and varied surface over more than two centuries, with visible knots, old repairs, shrinkage and wear contributing to its character.
The substantial traditionally constructed carcase retains broad solid timber boards to the rear, together with an old French garde-meubles label for Dubouil of Bordeaux and Agen, documenting the piece’s history in south-western France.
Recently cleaned, waxed and polished while retaining its established patina. In good antique condition, with old repairs, alterations and expected wear consistent with age and use.
