A French Louis-Philippe period buffet or cabinet, dating to the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
The rectangular top, veneered in figured mahogany and with rounded front corners, is set above a deep cushion-moulded frieze concealing a full-width drawer. Below are two cupboard doors arranged with broadly bookmatched figured mahogany veneers.
The doors and front uprights are enriched with narrow barley-twist mouldings. The cupboard opens to an oak interior fitted with shelves. The cabinet stands on turned front feet and shaped bracket feet to the rear. The barley-twist motif, turned front legs and use of figured mahogany over oak suggest higher end provincial cabinetmaking.
The cabinet has been cleaned, sympathetically restored, waxed and polished. It retains variations in colour, surface marks and minor losses consistent with age and use. Historic shrinkage cracks to the sides have been filled and stabilised. The locks are in functioning condition and a working key is retained.
