A handsome pair of early nineteenth-century mahogany fauteuils, with distinctive gondola-form backs, gently rolled crest rails and sweeping armrests terminating in finely carved, bound-reed supports. The chairs are raised on square tapering front legs and outwardly swept sabre legs.
Of elegant proportions and restrained neoclassical design, the fauteuils exhibit the architectural character associated with French Empire furniture. The mahogany retains a rich, mellow patina, with attractive wear to the armrests and carved details. Later upholstered in a pale blue patterned fabric with complementary braid trim.
Good antique condition, with surface wear and patina consistent with age. Later upholstery with minor signs of use.
Continental European, probably French, Empire or early Restauration period, circa 1810–1830.
