A George III Style Mahogany and Gilt Wall Mirror

$750.00

A 19th century mahogany wall mirror of broad rectangular form, with a finely shaped fretwork frame surrounding a bevelled mirror plate. The moulded inner surround is enriched with a narrow gilt border, while the crest is centred by a carved and gilt eagle with outstretched wings. The lower rail is set with an oval shell inlay.

The mahogany has a rich, warm colour and good surface patina. The mirror plate retains attractive age-related foxing and spotting. The gilt eagle has an old repaired fracture, now stable, with visible evidence of age and wear to the gilded surface. Minor marks and wear throughout are consistent with age and use. The reverse retains its old boarded back and bears an indistinct workshop or inventory stamp.

English, 1870-1900.

Dimensions: 94cm wide x 78cm high.
