A Fine Louis-Philippe Figured Walnut Commode

$3,450.00

On Hold

A superb French Louis-Philippe commode of particularly fine quality, distinguished by its richly figured walnut veneers, restrained architectural proportions and original white marble top.

The commode is constructed with five drawers, comprising four graduated drawers, the uppermost enclosed within a finely moulded frame, and a fifth concealed within the substantial plinth base. The drawers are flanked by architectural pilasters, with turned walnut pulls and recessed key escutcheons completing the composition.

Of particular note is the exceptional arrangement of the walnut veneers. Carefully selected and book-matched, the timber forms a pair of striking, almost elliptical figures which extend uninterrupted across the three lower drawer fronts. The remarkable depth and movement of the grain provide the principal ornamentation, exemplifying the Louis-Philippe preference for the natural beauty of fine timbers over applied decoration.

The commode is an especially accomplished example of its type, combining an imposing yet harmonious silhouette with unusually decorative veneers and excellent cabinetmaking. Its warm, golden walnut is beautifully complemented by the softly veined white marble.

Professionally restored and presented in superb condition, with a beautifully preserved finish, sound construction and smoothly operating drawers. Ready for immediate use.

France, c. 1840-1850

Dimensions: 122 cm W × 56 cm D × 102 cm H.
