A contemporary mahogany commode from the Rosenau collection by Michael Vanderbyl for Bolier. The rectangular case is veneered in richly figured swirl mahogany, with three broad drawers arranged beneath a shallow upper drawer and flanked by cylindrical columns raised on moulded bases. The chest rests on a substantial plinth with low block feet.
The Rosenau collection was conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Central European Biedermeier furniture, combining the architectural simplicity and strongly figured timbers characteristic of the period with a cleaner modern treatment. The book-matched mahogany across the drawer fronts is particularly effective, giving the otherwise restrained form considerable visual depth.
In good original condition, with minor surface marks, scuffs and wear consistent with age and use. The finish retains a warm lustre and the figured mahogany presents particularly well.
