A Biedermeier Two Drawer Commode, South Germany, c.1820

$2,750.00

The rectangular top is set above two broad drawers veneered in richly figured cherrywood and raised on long square tapering legs. The otherwise unadorned façade is punctuated only by small ebonised shield-shaped escutcheons.

The disciplined form and reliance upon the natural colour and figuring of the timber for decoration are characteristic of early Biedermeier cabinetmaking in southern Germany and Austria.

The commode retains a pleasing old surface with expected marks, scratches, small veneer losses and variations in colour. These have been preserved rather than disguised and contribute to the established character of the piece.

South German or Austrian, circa 1820.

Dimensions: 91cm W x 56cm D x 81cm H.

$350 flat-rate delivery available for Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne Metropolitan areas. Contact us to arrange inspection or collection by appointment from Teneriffe, Queensland.
