A substantial Biedermeier pedestal writing desk, veneered throughout in richly figured mahogany and retaining its original architectural arrangement of twin pedestals, three frieze drawers and raised gallery. The upper section incorporates two lockable cupboards flanking open shelves, with a further open compartment extending across the width below.
The desk is distinguished by particularly expressive book-matched and quartered veneers, carefully arranged across the drawer fronts, cupboard doors and surrounding panels. The restrained rectilinear form, block feet and near-total absence of applied ornament allow the figuring of the timber to provide the principal decoration. The pedestals incorporate cupboards to both the front and sides, an unusual and particularly practical feature. Retaining brass escutcheons, three working keys and a dark green leather writing surface with gilt-tooled border.
In very good antique condition, with minor marks, wear and variations to the polished finish consistent with age and use. Recently cleaned, waxed and polished while retaining the character and patina of the timber.
Germany, probably c.1830–1845
Dimensions: 130cm high, 152.5cm wide, 80cm deep
