A Baltic Empire Mahogany Secrétaire à Abattant, c.1830

$1,650.00
Sold Out

A Baltic Empire secrétaire à abattant of unusually compact proportions, veneered throughout the façade in richly figured and book-matched mahogany.

The rectangular top sits above a projecting cushion-form frieze drawer, with the principal case framed by carved engaged columns and containing a fall-front writing surface above four graduated drawers. A further deep drawer forms the plinth base, raised on block feet. The fall opens to reveal a fitted writing interior with three small drawers decorated with contrasting line inlay and pale ornamental escutcheons, retaining its extensively worn leather writing surface. Brass escutcheons throughout.

The restrained classical architecture, strongly figured mahogany and symmetrical veneer treatment are characteristic of the northern European interpretation of the Empire style. Its comparatively low, broad proportions are particularly distinctive.

In good antique condition with age-related wear throughout, including marks, scratches, minor veneer losses and variations to the historic finish. The leather writing surface is heavily worn and marked consistent with extensive historic use. Retaining a particularly attractive aged surface and strong colour. The secrétaire separates into two sections for transport.

Baltic region, probably Denmark or North Germany, circa 1830.

Dimensions: H 147 × W 99 × D 50 cm
